WTF?! // 31 Days of Halloween — Day 13 (Signs)

Happy 31 days of Halloween!

This year, we’re celebrating with a different movie pick each day that made us audibly gasp, “WHAT THE FUCK?!

On the 13th day of Halloween, I offer up the movie Signs. I know, I know. M. Night Shyamalan isn’t always on point. And for some, Signs is a giant swing and a miss. See what I did there? Alright, so it’s not a universally loved movie, and I get it; I hear you. I have a soft spot in my heart for this film, though.

I first watched this movie with my sisters sitting in base housing on an Air Force base in the middle of a desert in New Mexico. Did you hear me?! My sisters were literally stationed in the middle of a desert…on an Air Force base! See, the mood was totally set for us! It couldn’t have been more perfect.

Us being us, of course we were going to watch all the horrors. Thank you, Netflix! DVDs in the mail were a thing, and we loved that shit. Signs hit all the marks we needed for a scary movie night. Aliens. That’s it; just give us creepy aliens. Kids are in bed, it’s stupid dark outside, and it’s just us sisters telling each other stories trying to scare the crap out of each other.

Here’s the thing, though. I do not believe in aliens. Not an afterlife, no ghosts, none of that. However, give me a story involving any of those subjects, and you got me. I’m a sucker for a good ghost story, and aliens freak me the fuck out.

And then it happened, one of my favorite jump scares ever. When we got to the part of the movie where we start seeing news footage, that children’s party scene…I literally screamed and jumped up out of my seat.

There’s no exaggeration when I tell you I was shouting “what the fuck, what the fuck” over and over. My heart was beating out of my chest, and I quickly hopped back onto the sofa, tucking my feet under my butt. I guess I was afraid the alien would grab them out from under me. We kept scaring each other like huge dorks the rest of the week.

To this day, watching that single clip or thinking about that night still gives me the creeps. Absolutely 100% one of my favorite WTF scary movie moments ever
