We have talked about so many great horror movies we have loved this year. However, 2024 has also been a great year for genre television. I have been tempted to start Evil as my friends’ enthusiasm for this new season is infectious. And I say this as someone who still has 3 episodes of Joko Anwar’s Nightmares and Daydreams on Netflix left. I was also one of the people absolutely wrecked by the black comedy thriller Baby Reindeer. It is a great show, but please listen to those content warnings because it caught me off guard how unprepared I turned out to be. Meanwhile, I am still waiting for one of my favorite shows, From, to return and cause me more stress later this year.

The Brothers Sun

Where You Can Watch: Netflix

When the head of a Taiwanese triad is shot by an assassin, his oldest son heads to Los Angeles to protect his mother and little brother, who has been kept in the dark about the family business. I hit play on this show because I go where Michelle Yeoh goes. However, I was not expecting such a charming blend of action, comedy, and heart to keep us invested while waiting for Mother to throw her famous hands. I have had a constant churro craving since I binged this, and I am also fully invested in Justin Chien’s career now. I hate that this show was canceled because there was so much more story to tell about this family.

Chucky (Season 3: Part 4)

Where You Can Watch: Peacock

Chucky is still beefing with children after almost 40 years, and we are all welcome. Firstly, stop reading this and tweet #RenewChucky because the renewal campaign is still happening. Now that you have done that, we can get into why this murderous doll is consistently the best show on TV.  We had to wait for the back half of this season because people were not being paid appropriately in the industry last year and had to go on strike. Luckily, the squad did not disappoint upon their return. Don Mancini and company gave us everything we expected while somehow going even bigger than ever. We have new dead Devon Sawa characters, more iconic moments from Jennifer Tilly, and we are even more jealous that Brad Dourif is not technically our real dad. He just fucking feels like it most days.

Dead Boy Detectives

Where You Can Watch: Netflix

Two nice young dead men, Charles and Edwin, spend their time on Earth solving supernatural crimes and avoiding going into the afterlife. Speaking of TV shows that need to be renewed already, where is the news on this gem? This show is filled with badass women characters, is giving intersectionality, and is not afraid to pull you aside while running through hell to make you feel your feelings. I loved this season and wanted it to be longer. However, the finale set up some very cool things that I deserve to see come to fruition. So, for all that is unholy, please put them back to work post haste so I can get a new season ASAP.

Doctor Who (Series 14 Of New Era)

Where You Can Watch: Disney+

The Doctor continues traveling through time and space in his little blue box. This series saw Ncuti Gatwa step in as the Fifteenth Doctor alongside his companion, Ruby Sunday (Millie Gibson). Anyone even remotely familiar with Gatwa’s work knew his Doctor was going to be a moment. However, many of us did not understand he would be serving award-worthy performances weekly. Or that his version of the beloved alien would have a dangerous amount of game. Which is why the Doctor might be adding a husband to his roster if Rogue (Jonathan Groff) returns and I get my way. The eight episodes flew by, and I am supposed to be calm until the holiday episode airs later this year. It feels a little cruel.

Interview With The Vampire (Season 2)

Where You Can Watch: AMC+

Louis de Pointe’s continues to tell his story to journalist Daniel Molloy in this television adaptation of Anne Rice’s novel. This series continues to have some of the best performances on TV. They also continue to assemble the hottest actors to play these vampires, which might explain why the characters are so messy. Because my beloved Claudia was recast, I was worried the show would not feel the same. However, Delainey Hayles’ take on this character quickly won us over. This is great because most of the season is her and Louis (Jacob Anderson) trying to hide what they did to Lestat (Sam Reid) from their new vampire family. Come for the hot vampires, but stay for the drama and betrayal. I am happy this show was renewed early because we all need this next chapter the second it is ready.

True Detective: Night Country (Part 1)

Where You Can Watch: Max

Men operating a research station vanish in Ennis, Alaska, which forces Chief Danvers and Navarro to confront the darkness themselves to get answers. I am a huge fan of Issa López’s work and leaned in when I heard she was resurrecting the series. However, I was not ready for her to blow us all away so effortlessly while proving that the detective subgenre still has some life left in it. I hope she, Jodie Foster, Kali Reis, Fiona Shaw, and the entire team have rested. If award shows decide to suddenly get it together, they will be carrying a ton of trophies for their work on this show and will need their energy. Hopefully, others are taking note of how to avoid the usual copaganda missteps and do better.

Those are just 6 of the 2024 genre TV shows I am trying to make my new personality. I still have to start Parasyte: The Grey and watch the last half of Supacell. I also still want to check out The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live, Inspector Rishi, and many more titles. We are drowning in quality TV this year, and I am living my best life.
