Happy 31 days of Halloween!
This year, we’re celebrating with a different movie pick each day that made me audibly gasp, “WHAT THE FUCK?!“
On this day, the 9th day of Halloween, we’ve chosen It Follows as our WTF movie moments flick. David Robert Mitchell’s 2014 film about an Entity that begins stalking a young woman after a strange sexual encounter became an instant hit when it premiered in theaters. Maika Monroe (Jay) is left with a killer supernatural “gift” that begins hauntingly following her as she tries to understand and stop the Entity from following her. The whole premise comes from an idea derived from the mind of Mitchell after being plagued by a recurring dream. In the dream, he was stalked by an unknown predator who continually walked slowly toward him.
From the beginning of It Follows, I’d jump in my seat and gasp every time the Entity would make an appearance. It happened way too many times. Enter 7’7″ tall Mike Lanier. When he graced the screen with his presence, I was shooketh. “What the fuck!?” I feel awful that at first notice, it was his height that was jarring. Still, he seemed to be coming from a different dimension with how he didn’t “fit” the doorways and hallways, his makeup elevated the discomfort level, and his movements just took it over the top. I love this movie!
The period and season of It Follows is vague; their clothes and electronics are out of place. The Entity can look like anyone and is only visible to the infected person, and it has only one goal. It has no other thoughts, no creative measures to trap and catch; it only walks slowly and straight for you. Everything from the Entity’s mood, pacing, and form is unsettling. And when it does catch up, and you see with your own eyes the method of your demise, the words, “What the fuck” will cross your lips.
