Happy 31 days of Halloween!
This year, we’re celebrating with a different movie pick each day that made us audibly gasp, “WHAT THE FUCK?!“
On the 15th day of Halloween, I bring to thee the beauty that is V/H/S/94! The V/H/S series keeps bringing on the horror in the most inventive ways. Each film gives more than the previous.
V/H/S/94 was just released last year, 2021, and revolves around a police SWAT team investigating a mysterious VHS tape, a cult, and a conspiracy. Oh my! I might have chosen to talk about Chloe Okuno’s “Storm Drain” and the hideous monster, Raatma, but I experienced something even more terrifying. Simon Barrett’s “The Empty Wake” shook me more than once.
But as it was, it was most definitely, “The Subject” that sent me straight to what-the-fuck land. This segment was written and directed by Timo Tjahjanto and centers around the scary “mad scientist” character and his grotesque experiments. He’s toiling away in the lab all day with his kidnapped subjects, attempting to engineer his own living, re-engineered mechanical human. It’s all shocking, and each of the man’s failed experiments seems to have experienced the scariest and most unimaginable tortures.
That is until he awakens his magnum opus. We are horrified to learn, along with this poor woman, what she’s endured and the other horrors around her. We view these atrocities through her eyes as a newborn robot. What the fuck has this man created? The whole segment is fantastic and terrifying to watch.
