Hulu’s “Huluween” kicks off the spooky season with an amazing line-up of horror. One director’s short film, Mr. Crocket, was a part of Hulu’s “Bite Sized Halloween” in 2022 and now will be premiering as a full-length feature in this season’s “Huluween”. Turning a short film into a feature is a daunting and oftentimes difficult process. However, director Brandon Espy is defying those odds with Mr. Crocket.
Mr. Who?
In Mr. Crocket, a former child TV host (Elvis Nolasco), who has the magic ability to emerge from the television, is kidnapping children and brutally killing their parents. He soon comes face to face with a mother (Jerrika Hinton). She will do everything in her power to get her child back before she loses him for good.
The film, set in 1993, is a throwback to shows like Barney and Mister Rogers. However, it a demonic twist, which is sure to make you relive your childhood nightmares. Espy and co-writer Carl Reid hold nothing back with the depiction of Mr. Crocket, who believes he is saving children from parents who no longer want to be their parents. From over-the-top, gory kills and insane practical effects to emotional, raw performances that tug at your heartstrings, Mr. Crocket delivers on all fronts.
Why It Works
Nolasco’s performance as Mr. Crocket is diabolical, and we love to see it. With his creepy smile, he is likable and charming, but at the flip of a switch all that changes. Hinton also delivers a powerful performance as Summer, a mother who refuses to lose her son against the odds.
Mr. Crocket is a refreshing addition to the Black horror subgenre and gave us something we have been wanting more of in horror, a way to tell Black stories in original and creative ways. From its opening sequence until the last showdown, this film provides exactly that.
Mr. Crocket drops on Hulu on October 11th.
