It’s that time of year that we gather with family to celebrate the holidays. If you’re lucky, you actually enjoy hanging out with your family. Maybe you love your cousin’s stories from her trip to Portugal. Or perhaps your Tia has the best chisme from all your relatives. Sometimes we’re not so lucky, though. We have to deal with toxic family members who define our anxiety. Well, it could be worse. We could have the family dynamics straight out of a horror film. So today I have the cure for your holiday get-togethers. Here are six movies that will make your family drama look tame.
Hereditary
Directed by Ari Aster
Where you can watch: HBO Max, Hulu, VOD
Grandma dies and your mom isn’t handling it so great. And now you have to take your little sister to a party on top of all the awkwardness. Life can’t get any worse. Oh, wait. I think I spoke too soon. But seriously, when you think your mom is a special kind of interesting, just remember that it could be worse. She could be crawling around on the ceiling trying to kill you.
House of 1000 Corpses
Directed by Rob Zombie
Where you can watch: HBO Max, Kanopy, Hulu, VOD
You think your loca cousin with the record is bad? That’s nothing compared to the Firefly family. Yeah, sitting through your snotty cousin’s performance of hot cross buns is torture. However that’s nothing compared to the literal torture you’ll have to endure if you don’t like Baby’s rendition of “I Wanna Be Loved By You”.
We Are What We Are (2010)
Directed by Jorge Michel Grau
Where you can watch: Kanopy, VOD
Who else loves pumpkin pie with a huge dollop of Cool Whip on top? Oh come on! I know I can’t be the only one. You take the time to bake that special dish and show up at your auntie’s with casserole dish in hand. Then you find out Patricia and the kids were invited this year. Great, now who’s going to eat your candied yams? Patricia y familia are picky eaters afterall. Only the finest human will do.
The People Under the Stairs
Directed by Wes Craven
Where you can watch: Peacock, VOD
There’s always been something kind of odd about your aunt and uncle. I mean, they call each other Mommy and Daddy. They treat your cousin Alice so horribly, too. She’s afraid to even look at them cross. But that’s not the oddest part. They somehow always get out of hosting the holiday dinner when their turn comes up. It’s kind of like they’re hiding something back home.
Frailty
Directed by Bill Paxton
Where you can watch: The Roku Channel, Hoopla, Tubi, Pluto TV, VOD
We all have someone uber religious in our families. You feel like you’re always being judged and preached to. I’m never one to turn my nose to a prayer thrown my way. Lord knows I could use some help every now and then. Condemnation and holy hands are another story, though. Nobody wants Daddy Meiks calling them a demon. Especially since it will most likely be followed by a pipe to the head.
Dead End
Directed by Jean-Baptiste Andrea and Fabrice Canepa
Where you can watch: Prime Video, Tubi, Pluto TV, VOD
Road trips. They’re absolutely my favorite. Jumping in the car and heading to wherever because the journey is what makes it fun. All the pit stops, tagging your brother and sister every time you see a VW buggy, spotting the license plates from every state. There’s one thing you won’t find me doing, though. I’m not taking any short cuts. Who knows what could happen on that less traveled road! You could end up on a never ending road to nowhere being hounded by a hearse.

I love horror because it's a comfort genre for me. I have many labels in life which means I'm busy but never too busy to pop a scary or genre flick on the tube to enjoy. In addition to life and writing for Horror Movie Blog, I am the former co-host to the late Nightmare on 5th Street: A horror movie podcast. May she rest in peace. You can find my reviews here on HMB and TheCherryPicks.com.
