IT: Welcome to Derry // Episode 6 – In the Name of the Father

Week 5 has passed and now week 6 is here with a new episode of IT: Welcome to Derry. Let’s get into this recap, friends. Let the spoilers commence. The episode opens in 1935 at Juniper Hill Asylum. A young girl is woken in the night and guided by a woman through the monochrome, dreamlike halls toward the boiler room, where she’s been told “the clown” will meet her. A single red balloon floats into the scene; its color the only thing not washed out. The woman reassures the child that it’s just a balloon. But as it drifts through a doorway, Pennywise snatches it, his glowing eyes peering from behind its surface.

In the present storyline, Will Hanlon is lectured harshly by his father, Leroy, for going into the sewers. Will insists he and the others have faced the clown before and know how to fight it. Leroy, agitated, possibly influenced by Pennywise, slaps his son. Will runs from the house, believing the clown has wormed its way into his father’s mind.

At the Standpipe, the kids argue about the shard weapon that harmed IT. Will asks to hold it, but Lilly refuses, snapping that only she can touch it. Ronnie challenges her, pointing out that Lilly dragged them into the sewers in the first place and questioning why they should trust her. When Ronnie calls her crazy, Lilly clutches the shard with a frightening intensity. Marge attempts to calm her and is snapped at as well. Ronnie storms off, saying she regrets ever helping get Lilly released from Juniper Hill. Will follows Ronnie to talk.

Elsewhere, Dick wanders toward the Airmen’s hangout, the Black Spot, haunted by hallucinations of standing in water. He contemplates drinking to drown out what he saw in the sewers. Meanwhile, Will and Ronnie share a quiet moment that nearly turns romantic before Charlotte pulls up in a car and orders them inside. She drives them to the Black Spot, where it’s revealed Hank Grogan is being sheltered. Dick is furious, worrying the police will discover Hank’s presence and draw dangerous attention to the Black Spot, especially now that Will and Ronnie have shown up.

Back at the Standpipe, Marge tends to her injured eye when Rich appears behind her. He helps her redress it, and she gives him a warm look, after which he suddenly tosses his toy airplane off the Standpipe, watching it glide down into an open sewer pipe below.

In the barracks, Major Hanlon meets with Dick, pressing him to use his mysterious “gift” to stop what’s happening in Derry. Dick erupts, screaming for him to leave. Hanlon warns that he’ll force Dick to do his duty if necessary. Returning home, Hanlon finds Charlotte packing. She confronts him about hitting Will and informs him that she knows Hank is at the Black Spot. She declares she’s leaving town the next day and taking Will, insisting Hanlon must repair his relationship with their son.

At school, Lilly suffers hallucinations of Pennywise as she clutches the shard in class. Her dead father’s mutilated corpse bursts from her desk. It taunts her, saying that no one can help her and warning, “You’ll die if you try”, a foreshadowing of lines directed at Beverly Marsh in IT lore.

Meanwhile, Marge and Rich eat lunch together. Rich admits he’s so terrified of the voices in his house’s pipes, voices Marge also hears, that he’s been urinating in a jar to avoid going to the bathroom. He gives Marge an old eye patch he found in his attic. Patty and the Pattycakes interrupt, mocking Lilly and calling Marge and Rich freaks. Marge finally stands up for herself, ripping off her eye-covering to reveal her injury. The shock causes one of the Pattycakes to choke on her gum, giving Marge a moment of triumph.

While Will, Rich, and Marge head to the Black Spot to visit Ronnie, Lilly goes to Mrs. Kersh’s house. A neighbor watches her uneasily as she enters. Inside, she browses a photo album and finds a picture of Ingrid’s father that eerily resembles Pennywise. Ingrid surprises her, and when Lilly confesses that she went into the sewers, Ingrid comforts her and leads her to the attic. There, Lilly sees a photo of Pennywise among Ingrid’s relics. Ingrid explains that her father was a carnival performer known as “Pennywise the Dancing Clown,” taken from her when she was young. She admits she was at the cemetery the night the kids were attacked, hoping to see him again.

Ingrid recounts her past: as a young nurse at Juniper Hill, she overheard a girl, Mabel, speaking about the clown. Ingrid led Mabel to the boiler room, where Pennywise appeared. As he addressed the girl, Ingrid called him “Papa,” startling him. After a violent chase, Pennywise separated the two and killed Mabel while Ingrid watched from behind a door. Unpainted and eerily calm, he told Ingrid he needed her help and that she could “bring him back.” Horrified, Lilly slashes Ingrid’s hand with the shard and flees the house.

At a bar elsewhere in town, locals speculate about Hank Grogan’s whereabouts. Henry Bowers arrives, saying he received an anonymous tip that Hank is hiding in only one possible place. He strongly implies it’s the Black Spot and notes that he was fired shortly after receiving a tip from a mysterious woman.

Inside the Black Spot, Dick sits quietly while Rich and Marge watch couples dancing. Rich curiously asks what kind of dancing they’re doing as the scene grows lively and intimate. The two order Cokes, only to realize the drinks contain something stronger than soda – “Air Force Coke.” The band then invites Rich to sit in for their drunk drummer. Rich surprises everyone with his musical talent, energizing the entire club into a joyous explosion of song and dance. Marge joins in the revelry.

Back at Mrs. Kersh’s, Ingrid dons her full Pennywise costume, her transformation mirroring her psychological unraveling. The episode ends as multiple vehicles pull up outside the Black Spot. Armed men in masks step out carrying shotguns and rifles, preparing for what is clearly a violent raid.
