Marshmallow streaming guide movie still

It’s a New Year // It’s a New Streaming Guide

It’s a new year, it’s a new streaming guide! January has arrived, and with it, a host of horror movies are available for us to stream. You can search all your favorite platforms to see what’s new, or you can trust me and my taste and read through my random number of movies. Seriously, though, there are so many, and with the new year, there are many lists. I thought I’d gather a variety of movies that will hopefully kick off your new year with a bang. Let’s begin.

Mother of Flies
Where you can watch: Shudder

I missed Mother of Flies at several festivals, and I have been DYING to see it since. A young woman with a terminal disease seeks help from a witch in the woods. Obviously, something bad will happen because all good things come at a cost. Mother of Flies premieres on Friday, January 23rd, on Shudder.

Chain Reactions
Where you can watch: Shudder

I’ve added a documentary for your viewing pleasure. Chain Reactions follows the impact and influence of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre on five artists- Patton Oswalt, Karyn Kusama, Takashi Miike, Alexandra Heller-Nicholas, and Stephen King. It’s available to stream on Shudder on January 9th, along with the original The Texas Chain Saw Massacre.

Marshmallow
Where you can watch: Hoopla and Shudder

Marshmallow is purely on my list because of the camp slasher angle. Morgan is sent to a summer camp where a campfire story comes to life. There’s nothing like a bunch of kids, far from home, being chased around by a maniac.

Dawn of the Dead (2004)
Where you can watch: Starz and Netflix

A group of strangers takes shelter together in an empty mall after a zombie apocalypse. I must always state that the intro to this movie is still one of the best in movie history. Dawn of the Dead is a great remake, and I can still enjoy both without having to compare them.

District 9
Where you can watch: Netflix

Aliens landed on Earth 30 years ago to find refuge from their dying planet. They are sheltered in South Africa, in an area called District 9, while the government does its best to learn the aliens’ technology. A government agent contracts a virus that alters his DNA, and he can only find refuge amongst the aliens.

Bone Lake
Where you can watch: Netflix

A couple’s vacation at a beautiful estate is interrupted when they are forced to share the place with a mysterious couple. From there, we know everything will spiral out of control. I cannot wait to catch this on Netflix, January 15th.

If I Had Legs I’d Kick You
Where you can watch: HBO Max

This is another movie on my list that I haven’t watched yet. I have watched this short preview, and I know that it’s listed as a thriller and dark comedy. It follows a woman whose life is crashing down around her, and I want to watch her lose her shit. If I Had Legs I’d Kick You premieres on HBO Max on January 30th.

Bodies Bodies Bodies
Where you can watch: HBO Max

A group of young 20-somethings gets together for some fun at a big mansion. They play a game called Bodies Bodies Bodies. One person plays the killer, and the rest must escape. However, when someone turns up dead, everything gets worse and spirals out of control. Those are all my favorite things in a movie.

Love Lies Bleeding
Where you can watch: Cinemax, HBO Max, Paramount+, and Plex

I’ve added another thriller because I am much more romantic than I thought I was. Lou falls hard for a bodybuilder named Jackie. Lou’s family is heavily involved in crime. And I think I can generically add “and of course, everything spirals out of control.” However, there’s nothing generic about the story or the action. Love Lies Bleeding begins streaming on Paramount+ and Plex on January 9th.

Fresh 2022
Where you can watch: Hulu and Paramount+

A woman meets the perfect man who takes her on a romantic getaway. Unfortunately, he’s been hiding his unusual appetites. Even when you know what’s coming, you really don’t know what’s coming.

Eve’s Bayou
Where you can watch: Prime Video, Plex, Kanopy, Peacock, and Tubi

It’s been a spell since I watched Eve’s Bayou, and now I have a great reason to watch it. Young Eve sees something she shouldn’t have, which begins to unfoil all the secrets of this picture-perfect family during the early 1960s. It begins streaming for free on Tubi on January 7th.

Where the Devil Roams
Where you can watch: Prime Video and Tubi

Is this another Adams family film in this streaming guide? Of course it is! Where the Devil Roams begins streaming on Tubi on January 5th. It follows a murderous family of sideshow performers during the Depression era. I’ve watched it several times, and there’s always something more to admire.

30 days of night
Where you can watch: Tubi

I decided to close out this streaming guide with 30 Days of Night specifically because I couldn’t find it to stream last month. At the time, I wrote a streaming guide titled “Stuck in the Snow,” and 30 Days of Night was nowhere to be found. Vampires attack a small Alaskan town where the darkness and weather have trapped everyone for the next 30 days. It’s exciting and nothing like what I expected upon my first watch.

So we’ve established it’s a new year, and for most of us, more work, more of the same old. Watching movies is my favorite pastime, and I’ll be watching these throughout January. I hope you found something to enjoy as well, and keep coming back for more movie recommendations from us. Check us out here when you’re looking for something fresh.
