2025 has been a good year for horror. We’ve been eating good with Sinners, Bring Her Back, The Ugly Stepsister, Hearts Eyes, and more! We are about halfway through the year, so much more is to come. I’ve been keeping my eyes on the horror streets to stay updated with upcoming releases. We are getting a fun blend of different sub-genres, ranging from psychological to supernatural. These five films have been on my radar since I got wind of them, and I can’t wait to park myself in the theater.
5. Sketch – August 6
In the last couple of years, I’ve begun diving into horror comedy. It’s a playful subgenre that doesn’t mind taking the horror elements to ridiculous extremes. Seth Worley’s debut feature film, Sketch, is about a grieving single dad trying to navigate the next steps as his daughter’s drawings come to life and wreak havoc on the town. I am excited to see how dark and silly the drawings (and hopefully deaths) will be. I’m sure it will get creative with its PG-rating. I’m a huge fan of R-rated movies, but I love to see the genre being more age-inclusive.
4. Him – September 19
While I am not the biggest fan of sports, I want in on any Monkeypaw production. Monkey Man was my favorite movie last year. Him follows a promising young football player who joins an isolated compound to train. I didn’t see a sports horror film starring Marlon Wayans on any horror bingo card, but here we are. Usually, he taps into the genre via horror-comedy. I am excited to see him play a seemingly more serious role. I’m curious if it will be similar to David Alan Grier’s performance in Tales From The Hood. I am new to Justin Tipping’s work, but if Jordan Peele produced it, there’s talent in the room. I will be counting down the days until release.
3. Weapons – August 8
The only information I have about this film is the premise and the image of a ghoulish boy. Weapons follows a community looking for answers after all, but one child from the same classroom vanishes. It seems like there will be elements of supernatural horror and mystery. This is Zach Cregger’s upcoming film. He directed Barbarian (2022) and was one of the producers for Companion (2025). I want to keep this film as much of a surprise as I can. It comes out near my birthday, so it will be a little treat for myself.
2. The Sound – June 27
I love the idea of a forbidden area. There’s always a group that will ignore the warning and trespass to their doom. Usually, it’s a haunted house, a tomb, or a forest. In this case, it’s a cliff, which already comes with a level of danger. The Sound follows a group of climbers as they embark on a dangerous climb that has been off-limits for years. As they begin the climb, they realize that malevolent forces are present. Survival horror and supernatural horror are a great pair, and I hope this film will be a pleasant surprise. Either way, I’ll be seated for it.
1. 28 Years Later – June 20
I consider 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later horror staples. The infected are terrifying. They change within seconds. There are multiple ways to become infected, down to a drop of blood. Instead of the typical shamblers, the infected sprint toward their next prey. The first film has Selena (Naomie Harris), one of the earlier Black final girls, and both movies show widespread chaos as infection swallows society whole. It is no surprise that the long-awaited 28 Years Later would make the top of my list! I have avoided all trailers (yes, even the one right above). Unfortunately, I have seen one haunting visual from the film, but that didn’t dim my enthusiasm.
I will be SEATED for the next installment in this franchise. I am excited to see what director Danny Boyle (28 Days Later) will bring to the table so many years later and have no doubt that it will blow my socks off. This sequel follows survivors of the rage virus 28 years after the first outbreak.
These upcoming films have me set for the summer. I am most excited for 28 Years Later, but each movie has a unique draw. I hope horror continues on this renaissance because I am living for it!
