Thanks to Imagine Fantastic Film Festival 2025, I was able to revisit the classic Re-Animator for its 40th anniversary. Available now in 4k UHD, it’s as fresh as the corpses Herbert West needs for his ghoulish experiments.
Director Stuart Gordon based his screenplay on Lovecraft’s novella Herbert West, Re-Animator, a Frankenstein parody. Herbert West (Jeffrey Combs) is cast out of the Institute of Medicine in Switzerland and finds a new home at Miskatonic University in New England under Dr. Hill (David Gale). Determined now more than ever to find a cure for death, he begins his experiments anew with the help of his skeptical roommate, Dan Cain (Bruce Abbott).
The Chisme
I don’t think there’s a better word for chisme than chisme. So, if you’re nosey, lean in. Dan Cain, a medical student, has a room for rent. His girlfriend, Megan Halsey (Barbara Crampton), is the daughter of the dean of their medical school. Dr. Hill is Mr. West’s and Mr. Cain’s instructor. Dr. Hill also has a creepy obsession with Megan, collecting her hair and all. Enter Mr. West. He needs a room and a secret lab, and he’s hiding his disastrous past in Switzerland. Moreover, Megan is instantly distrustful, but it’s the 1980s, and nobody listens to the woman.
Now that we’re caught up, Mr. West begins his experimentation on the murdered or accidentally killed Rufus the cat. West miraculously revives the dead cat with his neon, glow stick-colored reagent, and Cain walks in on the gruesome reawakening. Watching these two swing around and fight the mutilated Rufus is top-notch humor. This only encourages West to continue his experiments and convinces Cain to assist.
Morgue of Horrors
Convinced that all he needs is a fresh corpse, West revives a morgue resident who, in turn, kills Mr. Halsey, the dean of their school. Huzzah! An even-fresher corpse. The biggest mystery here isn’t how Mr. West created his reviving reagent but how he keeps himself out of prison. Every incident is bloody, gory, and out of control.
Dr. Hill is beheaded and revived while stealing Mr. West’s work, because why not? And the sicko kidnaps the beautiful Megan to carry out his own sicko fantasies. Can you believe it gets wilder from there? Perhaps a dark, smoky dance club filled with zombies was the magic moment that Re-Animator singed itself into my memory.
Re-Animator was just as exciting to rewatch as it was the first time I discovered it. West and Megan are my favorite characters, and I love the messy plot. The practical effects are over-the-top and incredibly fun. Pacing and music are excellent, and the runtime is even sweeter. This new 4K UHD-HDR will definitely be a great addition to your physical media library.
