I love me some classic horror flicks. A pre-1960s film flings you back in time to experience horror in its rawest form. This is where you can truly begin to appreciate the origins of horror cinema. You can see it in the practical effects, the stories, the acting, and the unexpected audience reactions.
I’m always drawn back to these classics, not just for what they are, but for everything they built. Plus, they’re just a good time to watch. So, without further ado, here are six classic horror movies for you to check out.
The Thing From Another World (1951)
Directed by: Christian Nyby
The Thing From Another World is a fantastic sci-fi horror movie, not just for its story but for its inspiration on the genre. Set in Alaska, in the frozen earth, we have a team of scientists and the military messing around with extraterrestrial life. Of course, we all know what happens when the military messes around with alien life forms. Need I say more?
The Queen of Spades (1949)
Directed by: Thorold Dickinson
It’s always about the money. Even with Captain Herman Suvorin, who’s afraid of losing all of his. This is why when he thinks he’s found the secret to wealth, he’s all in. But what could possibly go wrong when you harass the countess for her secrets?
Bride of Frankenstein (1935)
Directed by: James Whale
I cry. What else can I say? I cry when I watch this one. I’ve always been Team Monster. I may be picking sides when there aren’t any, but his story is just so tragic. Sure, he’s a bit of a clumsy fool, but he means well. And there’s nothing wrong with wanting a friend by your side when you’re up to shenanigans.
Cat People (1942)
Directed by: Jacques Tourneur
Irena has a family secret that’s a bit out there. Oliver decides to marry her anyway. That’s love for you. Or maybe it’s something else. Too bad for Oliver, Irena isn’t that easy. Too bad for Irena, that’s all that seems to interest Oliver, because his interest is soon taken by someone else. Too bad for that pair because Irena is now a woman scorned.
Tarantula (1955)
Directed by: Jack Arnold
You guessed it. It’s about a tarantula. A big ol’ giant one. You got the military mucking shit up and the scientists who fucked it all up to begin with. Tarantula is just a fun movie to watch.
There’s something thrilling about watching the genre’s evolution over time. Yet even with all that change, familiar fears resurface. Whether you’re a long time devotee or it’s your first dip into the pool, I hope these five films inspire you to explore more classic horror.
Dalia De Leon
I love horror because it's a comfort genre for me. I have many labels in life which means I'm busy but never too busy to pop a scary or genre flick on the tube to enjoy. In addition to life and writing for Horror Movie Blog, I am the former co-host to the late Nightmare on 5th Street: A horror movie podcast. May she rest in peace.
