stuck in the snow, werewolves within movie still

Stuck In the Snow // A Streaming Guide

Winter is all but arrived, and some of y’all are enjoying the snowfall. You can wear your cozy sweaters and pull out your big blankets to sip your hot cocoa by a warm fire. Hell, I have no idea what winter feels like because I live so close to Mexico. Our trees don’t even change color down here. I have never been stuck in the snow. But I do love snuggling up on the sofa and watching a good scary movie. If you get a snow day and you’re stuck in the snow, a good movie is all you need. Let’s all get comfortable and watch these unfortunate people, stuck in the snow.

The Lodge (2019)
Where you can watch: Kanopy and Tubi

A father leaves his two children under the care of his fiancée at their vacation home. After a blizzard leaves them isolated and trapped indoors, strange events begin to occur. After a rather jarring introduction, The Lodge is a slow-burning thriller that is well worth watching.

Dead Snow
Where you can watch: amc+, Kanopy, Philo, and Plex

I am not a fan of Nazisploitation films, but fuck Nazis. A group of medical students on a skit trip encounters the unimaginable: Nazi zombies. I do love a good zombie movie, and in this case, being stuck in the snow with Nazi zombies had me leaning all the way in.

The Shining (1980)
Where you can watch: HBO Max

Honestly, I am not a big fan of this one. However, the thought of being stuck in the snow with Jack Torrence is a true nightmare. A blizzard makes everything worse for Wendy and Danny, and I can’t help but watch with eyes wide open, hoping the pair escapes from this hell.

Misery
Where you can watch: Tubi

Misery is one of my favorite movies, and I try not to rewatch it. That sickening, unsettling feeling washes over me when I hear, “I’m your number one fan.” I have rarely had a more visceral reaction than when I had to suffer through that hobbling scene.

Frozen (2010)
Where you can watch: Hoopla, Plex, The Roku Channel, Fubo, Tubi, and ViX

Three skiers are forced to make life-or-death choices as they are stranded in a chairlift at a ski resort. Frozen is sad, desperate, and there’s more to fear than these three freezing to death.

The Wolf of Snow Hollow
Where you can watch: Prime, Tubi, Roku Channel

I recently rewatched The Wolf of Snow Hollow and enjoyed it just as much as I did on my first viewing. Officer Marshall has his hands full with an ailing father, a teenager he can’t connect with, and bodies piling up after each full moon. But most of all, he struggles with reminding himself that there’s no such thing as werewolves. I found it clever, humorous, and intriguing.

Let the Right One In
Where you can watch: Prime, Fubo, Hoopla, Kanopy, Philo, Plex, The Roku Channel, and Tubi

Eli has been around for over two centuries when she moves next door to a lonely, bullied boy named Oskar. No one is really stuck in the snow, but they are stuck with a vampire, and she needs to eat. Let the Right One In had me feeling the cold.

No Exit (2022)
Where you can watch: Hulu

Stranded at a mountain rest stop during a blizzard, a recovering addict uncovers a kidnapped child hidden in a car belonging to one of the people inside the building. She faces a terrifying struggle to identify who among them is the kidnapper.

Werewolves Within
Where you can watch: AMC+, Hulu, Kanopy, Philo, Shudder, and Tubi

This is my favorite whodunnit but with werewolves. I adore Sam Richardson and Harvey Guillen, but all the characters are excellent. When a proposed pipeline divides a small town, a snowstorm only amplifies their problems. Not only are they trapped by the weather, but there may be a monster in their midst.

What’s the first horror movie you think of centered on being stuck in the snow? The Thing first popped into my head, and I am glad I own it because it’s currently not streaming. Thankfully, we have a good list here for you to choose from.
