I’m always amazed at the horror selection at my local library. It’s pretty choice and quite diverse, ranging from the classics to semi current. The library can surprise you like that. We might have mentioned this before here at Horror Movie Blog, but did you know that with your library card, you also get a free subscription to Kanopy?
For the uninitiated, Kanopy is a streaming platform where you can find many different genre of entertainment including horror. And the horror selection is superb. If you got yourself a library card, well then it’s free. And now you got access to all this awesome free horror. Here’s a list of movies to get you started on Kanopy.
A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night
Iranian-American Ana Lily Amirpour wrote and directed this Iranian vampire western to perfection. The movie follows a young vampire as she rolls around on her skateboard in “Bad City”. She’s on the hunt and it’s not that hard to find what she’s looking for. A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night won the awards for a reason and you must check it out.
The Wicker Man (1973)
Yes, there was a version of this movie before the Nic Cage one. And it is campy AF. You must watch it. We have a police officer making his way to a small island village in search of a missing girl. Of course he’s set in his rigid puritanical and procedural ways amongst the pagan locals. There’s lots of dancing and singing and an ending you can see coming but still doesn’t disappoint.
Cube (1997)
Imagine waking up in a giant cube with no idea how you got in there. You meet a group of strangers in the same predicament and you realize there’s an endless number of cubes you must navigate. And oh yeah, some of them are booby trapped to kill you. What in the world did you do to deserve this? I’ve watched this movie more times than I can count. It still freaks me out.
Tucker and Dale vs Evil
What happens when two loveable hillbillies get mistaken for murderers? Pure mayhem. If this movie hasn’t come across your radar before, you must run, not walk, to watch it now. It’s got blood, great kills, and laughs for days. You can’t go wrong with a movie featuring a cabin in the woods.
Annihilation
When sci-fi meets horror, you’ve got a friend in me. Natalie Portman suits up as a biologist and soldier in this trippy movie. She wants to find her husband and solve the mystery of this other worldly phenomena where it’s too easy to lose yourself. The effects are on point and the story grips you tight and doesn’t let go. Annihilation is a definite must watch.
Carnival of Souls (1962)
Hauntingly beautiful and mesmerizing. A young woman finds that she’s having trouble adjusting after surviving a tragic car accident. She’s seeing and experiencing things and not sure what’s real and what’s not. She just wants to lead a normal life. The cinematography is stunning and the music pulls you in. This movie has a cult following and after you watch it, you’ll see why.
When Evil Lurks
An Argentinian film, When Evil Lurks tells the story of two brothers who try to rid their village of evil. Instead, things just get worse. It packs a true supernatural punch and delivers on the scares. It gets under your skin with its unsettling themes and sets the mood with unnerving dread. This is definitely a movie that’ll stick with you after you watch it.
So there you have seven movies you can watch for free on Kanopy. Of course there’s plenty more horror you can find on the streaming platform. This is just a tiny taste of all there is. Have you watched any of these films? Do you have any more Kanopy horror to recommend? Find me on Bluesky and let me know!
Dalia De Leon
I love horror because it's a comfort genre for me. I have many labels in life which means I'm busy but never too busy to pop a scary or genre flick on the tube to enjoy. In addition to life and writing for Horror Movie Blog, I am the former co-host to the late Nightmare on 5th Street: A horror movie podcast. May she rest in peace. You can find my reviews here on HMB and TheCherryPicks.com.
