The Norwegians love to have fun with their mythology, and it shows with movies like Trollhunter (2011), Troll (2022), and now Troll 2 (2025), which just debuted on Netflix. And before there’s any confusion, we are not talking about the animated DreamWorks Trolls (2016). Written by Espen Auken and directed by Roar Uthaug, Troll 2 continues the story of paleontologist Nora Tidemann (Ine Marie Wilmann). While it is a sequel, it can be watched as a standalone film without missing a beat. However, I highly suggest you watch Troll so that you don’t miss out on any of the fun. It is also available on Netflix for your viewing pleasure.
Troll 2 begins with Andreas Isaksen (Kim Falck) enlisting the help of Nora in a government project he’s working on. The Norwegian government has been keeping a hibernating troll captive to study its usefulness. They are trying to figure out how to best utilize it to their advantage. However, the project is in danger of losing its funding. Saddened by its captivity, Nora inadvertently awakens the troll, which triggers its escape.
There are a few things you need to know about troll mythology. The humans and trolls used to live side by side, giants alongside people. But as the kingdom of Norway took control of the land and Christianity spread, the trolls were forced underground. Now the trolls’ weaknesses are rooted in sunlight and superstitions.

The military begins its campaign to eradicate the troll, but unfortunately, they’re unsuccessful at first. This is where we can get a little cheesy in the movie. But sadly, not unbelievable. No spoilers here, as this is actually shown in the movie’s trailer. When the troll breaks open the roof of a ski lodge/club, everyone inside starts snapping photos. One clubgoer even poses as he takes a selfie, one finger pointing at the troll. However, I put nothing past humanity anymore.
As the military was unsuccessful in taking down the troll, they enlist the help of another mythological creature. Unfortunately, it’s all in vain as this plan also fails. It’s with these failures in action that the movie really shines, though. Troll 2 is part action film, part creature feature, and it entertains spectacularly as its own creation. This is when we get treated to fun cinema. Does it get a little silly sometimes? Of course it does. But the action is solid, as is the acting. Even the fake trolls don’t take you out of the story.
As the movie rolls toward its conclusion, we are treated to more cheese in the form of B-roll news clips from around the world. But it fits, and it’s fun, so all is forgiven! At least it is for this movie watcher. By the end of the movie, we get a sensational showdown. Military might fighting the troll. Regular, everyday man battling the beast. And who comes out the victor in the end? You’ll have to watch to find out. I promise, you won’t be disappointed.

I love horror because it's a comfort genre for me. I have many labels in life which means I'm busy but never too busy to pop a scary or genre flick on the tube to enjoy. In addition to life and writing for Horror Movie Blog, I am the former co-host to the late Nightmare on 5th Street: A horror movie podcast. May she rest in peace.
