7 Horror Video Games We’re Excited To See In 2027

Summer Game Fest and PlayStation’s State of Play happened this month, and we got a peek (and sometimes even more) of all the cool games in the making and soon to be released. Horror and genre fans were not left hungry, as so many major and indie titles were announced for their enjoyment, too.

Returns of larger franchises, new titles of smaller studios, and so many flavors of horror. Here is my shortlist of the games announced for 2027 (hopefully) in the horror/cult/fantastic genre categories:

ILL – on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S

Atmospheric body horror with petrifying aliens. ILL promises queasy landscapes, alien possession, and first-person active horror.  Team Clout has only teased us till now, but ILL is already promising to leave us unable to turn the lights off. Great for fans of fleshy horror games such as Scorn.

Alien Isolation 2 – on Switch 2/Xbox Series X/PlayStation 5/PC

The dread of Alien Isolation still stays with me. Not only are you defenseless against the looming Xenomorphs, but apart from hiding, you can’t do anything. It is a masterpiece in fear while staying true to its source material. We don’t know much about its sequel, only that it is promising more of what made the first game so angst-inducing. This is definitely one of those games where I’ll watch someone play it live while I sit safely on my couch.

The Witcher IV – on Xbox Series X/Switch 2/PC/PlayStation 5

It has been almost 12 years since CD PROJEKT RED released the epic and acclaimed fantasy-horror The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Since then, we’ve gotten DLCs, and they’ve released Cyberpunk 2077. However, Witcher fans were always waiting for more. In The Witcher IV, we start a new saga in the Witcher world, now with Ciri taking center stage as the main protagonist, embarking on her journey as a monster-hunter. I am excited to follow a different silver-haired Witcher, now that she has matured into her own legendary self.

Ontos – on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S

From the makers of immensely creepy sci-fi horror SOMA, which not only crept under your skin but made you doubt your humanity, comes a new dark horror: Ontos. Ontos promises uneasy anxiety in this sci-fi mystery horror that takes place in a repurposed moon hotel. Expect imaginative body-horror while going through an unsettling exploration of the nature of reality. And with the imagery we’ve been teased with, you might not want to eat while playing (or watching someone else play) this.

The Wolf Among Us 2 – on Switch 2/PlayStation 4/Xbox One/PC/PlayStation 5/Xbox Series X/Switch

It’s time to return to Fabletown in this dark neo-noir thriller. You’re back playing sheriff Bigby Wolff amidst a deadly conspiracy that is tearing apart the precarious peace of the Fables who are exiled. This sequel is highly anticipated and has already generated a lot of buzz online. I will definitely check this out since the art style of the game always appealed to me.

1666: Amsterdam – on Xbox Series X/PC/PlayStation 5

Speaking of art style, welcome to Amsterdam during the dark days of colonial expansion. For fans of the atmosphere of Assassin’s Creed, but with more witchcraft and demons. In 1666, Amsterdam, you play in a third-person story-first horror action-adventure where Noa, the Collector, uses witchcraft to unmask demonic entities hiding behind human faces. As someone from the titular city, it’s amazing to see the canals and streets (that are all real, btw) in this grimy, creepy setting.

The Last Ronin PC/Xbox Series X/PlayStation 5

In this dystopian future, a battle-scarred New York City has a lone Turtle embarking on a mission to seek justice for the family he lost. Yes, this is a dark Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles story based on a similarly named comic book story arc. Who is the Last Ronin?

If you’re wondering why there are no dates with any of the announcements, in the gaming industry, dates often move around depending on so many factors. It’s best to follow the developments online or check closer to the end of the year for release updates. In the meantime, start saving up, so you don’t have to choose 😉
