Happy 31 days of Halloween!
This year, we’re celebrating with a different movie pick each day that made us audibly gasp, “WHAT THE FUCK?!“
Our 17th pick in the world of what the fuckery is…Men. Could you almost hear the tone I used? Men. Oh yeah, that’s the name of the movie. Not just men in general. I mean… This 2022 British folk horror is written and directed by Alex Garland and stars Jessie Buckley. Men is relatively new, so if you haven’t watched it and would like to avoid even the appearance of spoilers, read no further. I would hate to ruin the most interesting parts (in my humble opinion) of the film.
Harper (Jessie Buckley) takes a solo vacation to a beautiful cottage in the countryside after the unexpected death of her husband. The destination couldn’t be more picturesque, and she has all the space and fresh air she could need. She is haunted by recent memories of her husband that we can see in flashes, and through these, we learn she carries tremendous guilt.
This peaceful getaway quickly turns eerie as she encounters a mysterious man. It’s a horror movie, duh! Of course things were about to get eerie. Enter Rory Kinnear. The escape that our grieving Harper was relying on comes crashing to a halt as she begins to see something familiar in all the men in town. She is now being forced to see and face her grief, guilt, and hellish memories of her last moments with her husband.
So where’s the fuckery, you may be asking yourself. Well, you see, that’s the best part. In what I can only describe as the nesting dolls of What the fuck?! we are gifted a birthing scene of one what the fuck after another. Chef’s kiss, magnifique!
