May felt exceptionally long, and I am struggling to keep up with the new horror this year. What an exciting predicament. Sinners is sailing well above the competition I have running in my Letterboxd account. It is visually stunning, complemented by immersive music and sound design, all woven together in a captivating story. Heart Eyesis tops for fun and excitement, and Frewaka had me stunned. But I digress, I am here to discuss the movies I am most anticipating the rest of this year. I’ve got so many on my watchlist. Where should I begin? I think I’ve mustered a great variety. Let’s dig into my five most anticipated horror movies in 2025.
5. The Home – July 25
As a fan of the Purge franchise, The Home caught my eye immediately. I’m trying to avoid trailers, but I’m often skimming through press information for keywords like ‘sinister secrets’ and ‘forbidden rooms’ in old houses. Pete Davidson stars as a troubled man (and former foster child) working at a retirement home with a forbidden 4th floor. The elderly residents and caretakers harbor secrets, and he decides to uncover and expose the dirty laundry. First, I am a big fan of haunted houses and elder horror. The Home isn’t to be confused with The Home (Hemmet directed by Mattias J. Skoglund), which follows a man moving his mother into a retirement home. He begins to suspect supernatural activity may be the cause of his mother’s declining health. However, watch them both!
4. The Toxic Avenger – August 29
This one was a no-brainer for me. I watched the original at too early an age, and it was a lot for my tiny mind. However, I’m a big fan of body horror and monsters. The gnarlier the better. The Toxic Avenger is set in a fantasy universe and stars Peter Dinklage as Winston Gooze, a janitor who transforms into the mutant vigilante Toxie. I like the style and practical effects. Also, I know it’s going to be fun and rock.
3. The Long Walk – September 12
The Long Walk was one of the first short stories I read by Stephen King. I love short stories, but I raged when the story ended. We’ve waited so long, and I had chills all over while watching the trailer. America has become a police state (in this movie), and one hundred boys are chosen to compete in an annual contest. The winner will receive whatever they want for the rest of their life. The rules are simple: they must all walk, maintaining a certain speed, without stopping, until only one is left. Bonus, I get to watch David Jonsson.
2. M3GAN 2.0 – June 27
There are plenty of sequels to choose from, and yes, I decided on M3GAN 2.0. Of course, I am excited to see the latest from the Hell House LLC, The Conjuring, and Predator franchises. However, I am stoked to see M3GAN make a comeback. The original was an instant favorite for me. The trailer has me so excited, and those upgrades look awesome. Someone was bound to steal the tech that Gemma (Allison Williams) created. I am also glad to see that Cady (Violet McGraw) is still around to be the target of the military-upgraded Amelia. Don’t worry, M3GAN 2.0 has her own new protocols.
1. I Know What You Did Last Summer – July 18
I consider this one a birthday gift as it arrives in theaters for my annual birthday movie day. I love the original and the sequel. Brandy elevated the movie to stellar status. A reboot is exactly what we needed, and the Scream franchise has shown us the way (minus the upcoming sequel). A fresh new cast under the direction of Jennifer Kaytin Robinson and the return of our beloved Julie and Ray, I am giddy with anticipation. Five friends have an accident, they try to cover up, and a year later, someone is ready to send them a message. We know what you did last summer!
There we have it, five of my most anticipated horror films premiering throughout the rest of 2025. Additionally, HIM is going to be spectacular, and I am ready for the experience. I sort of felt it was a given, and it easily steals the show. I have so many on my radar, and it’s going to be another excellent year for horror. Check out these writers’ lists for more movies here.
Alma De Leon Clarke
I love horror. I consume genre films, tv, and books. THE THING is the greatest movie of all time and I wish Chucky was my bestie. I have 6 cats and 2 dogs and I'm a horror movie toy collector. I am not a professional critic but I do enjoy discussing horror with anyone who will listen.
