When I pitched my friends at Nightmare on 5th St an idea for a series where I ask my favorites for their favorite scary movies, I knew this would become Bryan Fuller’s problem. Luckily, he’s quick with a response and has excellent taste. For those of you that need a refresher, Fuller has gifted us Dead Like Me, Wonderfalls, Pushing Daisies, and Hannibal (TV Series) from a resume that is almost exclusively genre gold.
It’s December already, the year is almost gone, and what do we have to show for it all?

It’s officially Halloween, and I can share the best WTF moment I’ve seen this year. This one is the cherry on top in a year full of the best horror we’ve seen recently. Our 31st movie pick is Barbarian. Barb-bar-bar.. Bar-barbarian.
Our 30th movie pick is Jeff Barnaby’s Blood Quantum. Jeff Barnaby gave us such an exciting zombie universe influenced by the real-world genocidal violence against the First Nations people of Canada. Phenomenal story!

Our 29th movie is Misery (1990). This film was so unsettling to me that I’ve only watched it once. Kathy Bates is the queen of scares.

It is now the 28th day, and there has yet to be a shortage of WTF moments in horror for me to share. Let’s take it back to the year 1979 and a bizarre little film written and directed by the esteemed David Cronenberg, The Brood. Of course it’s on my list!

I tried to keep newer films off this list, but I couldn’t help myself. Day 26, I am getting into the what the fuck of Pandora’s boxes… Speak No Evil.
Day 25, we have chosen The Last Matinee (2020). Picture it. Montevideo, Uraguay. 1993. A mysterious man with black gloves and a crime-ing coat (you know, a coat you’d wear to do crimes in) sneaks into an old movie theater. I love that there’s no illusion of the motives or identity of who will be killing who.
