Unidentified Murder is one of the most charming surprises to come out of this year’s Fantasia 2026 lineup. It shows how a chaotic murder mystery of sorts can have as much heart as it does intrigue. Directed by Kwok Ka-Hei and Jack Lee Chun-Kit, the film builds tension from the start. The pacing never lets down as the story takes you through scenario after scenario of unmitigated turmoil.
25 years ago, 10-year-old Tang Chi-Ho (Wong Wai Ching Desmond) disappeared while playing with his best friends in the woods. Fast forward to today, and the leading conspiracy is that aliens abducted the young boy. His two friends, now grown, have been thrust back into the spotlight with this anniversary. For 25 years, they have stuck to that story.
The Algorithm Demands Chaos
Man (Renci Yeung) has a popular streaming channel called “Prank Your Boyfriend” and has decided to prank her boyfriend, Mark (Ling Man Lung). Mark and Kit (Ronald Lam) are Ho’s best friends grown up. Man thinks that hiring an actor to play the long-ago abducted Ho would be a fabulous idea. Catching wind of Man’s idea, they need to quickly take control of the situation.

Unidentified Murder plays on the social media consumption of today. However, it doesn’t lean so hard into it that you feel POV fatigue by the end of the movie. When the gag is used to forward the story, it is used successfully and just long enough so as not to overstay its welcome. Social media being at the center of the story, though, it is expertly pushed forward without being obnoxious.
Chan Charm Man Peter does a stellar job as the young actor, Kim, hired by Man who plays the newly found adult Ho. He brings a sense of lightness to tense moments. Every time you feel that things couldn’t get any worse, Kim is there to soak it all in and take it in stride. Mark and Kit only provide chaos with every fix they attempt to make. It is, of course, a welcome chaos when it comes to our entertainment.
Final Verdict
Unidentified Murder is absolutely guilty of a good time. This black comedy delivers on any promises it’s making when it comes to an enjoyable 86 minutes. From the young boy’s disappearance to the absolute mayhem that ensues, the film spits out nonstop scenarios never missing a beat. The pacing continues throughout the film to deliver a story that’s completely and thoroughly satisfying. Definitely keep an eye out for Unidentified Murder as this is a film you won’t want to miss.

I love horror because it's a comfort genre for me. I have many labels in life which means I'm busy but never too busy to pop a scary or genre flick on the tube to enjoy.
