WTF?! // 31 Days of Halloween — Day 30 (Blood Quantum)

Happy 31 days of Halloween!

This year, we’re celebrating with a different movie pick each day that made us audibly gasp, “WHAT THE FUCK?!

Our 30th movie pick is Jeff Barnaby’s Blood Quantum. Jeff Barnaby gave us such an exciting zombie universe influenced by the real-world genocidal violence against the First Nations people of Canada. Phenomenal story! There are several WTF moments in Blood Quantum, but there’s one particular scene that I am always dying to share. A zombie plague is quickly spreading, and the Indigenous residents of the Mi’kmaq reserve of Red Crow are immune to the virus. That doesn’t mean they can’t be eaten by the zombies outside their community. They have a solid position that they can fortify. Still, with many outsiders seeking refuge, they must decide how to keep themselves safe and help those who can easily spread the virus.

Blood Quantum has a strong cast led by Michael Greyeyes and Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers and bad-ass warriors like Stonehorse Lone Goeman, Brandon Oakes, and William Belleau. Together they keep the Undead at bay and quickly dispatch the strays with all manner of weapons, from chainsaws, swords, and guns. The story is brutal, and the action is gory and exciting.

If you haven’t seen it, you must. Gutted fish come back to life, a zombie mother gives birth, and a giant piece of farm equipment mows down an endless parade of the Undead. As usual, that over-the-top moment is the real game-changer for the film.

The character Lysol (Kiowa Gordon) is increasingly hostile to outsiders in their home and even lashes out at his own family. He’s abusing drugs and alcohol, and I’m hoping he’s on the menu soon for some stray zombie. But he gets better than that… or is it worse? Lysol decides to go after a young woman who’s been recently allowed refuge, and when he sneaks off with her, you think she might be in trouble. And she is, but that’s because she’s been hiding a bite. Of course she’s hiding a bite! Lysol gets an intimate moment with her in the form of mealtime.

Yes, this a-hole has his phallus nom nommed posthaste. What the fuck?!
