Happy 31 days of Halloween!
This year, we’re celebrating with a different movie pick each day that made us audibly gasp, “WHAT THE FUCK?!“
It’s the 21st already?! I present to you M. Night Shyamalan’s The Visit. Yes, you read that correctly. Perhaps this film does not come to mind so quickly when thinking of horror that made you want to cover your eyes or scream, “Oh dear god, no!” Hear me out.
In The Visit, siblings Becca and Tyler (Olivia Dejonge and Ed Oxenbould) decide to make a documentary while visiting their estranged grandparents for the first time. While their mother takes a vacation, the kids are left alone to get to know their Pop Pop and Nana (Peter McRobbie and Deanna Dunagan). To say their behavior becomes increasingly alarming may be an understatement.
I didn’t watch this one right away. When I did, I thought something supernatural was happening here, perhaps a demon possession…of course my mind always thinks demons. When I saw Nana running around on all fours under their house, I was spooked. But it was the climax of the film that got me. There’s quite a tumultuous sequence of events, startling discoveries, and deranged behavior; everything is frightening for these two kids who just wanted to meet their grandparents.
And the crescendo of the what the fuck avalanche came from Pop Pop…and poor Tyler gets it. It? It’s a dirty poop diaper pie to the kid’s face, and I lost it. WHAT THE FUCK?!! I was begging him not to do it, and they did it anyway.
