This week in film history!
Now imagine that echoing over a loudspeaker. Do it! Sometimes it can be difficult for me to make movie recommendations because I want to say, “Watch them all!” So let’s make this easy on me and choose our movies based on their anniversary release dates.
The Others
Released on August 2, 2001, in the US., it was written and directed by Alejandro Amenábar and starred Nicole Kidman. This film is a whole, legally drunk American years old! Big spooky house, fog for no reason, creepy, little pale children, ghosty noises, shadows everywhere.
The Blob (1988)
I’m talking the remake here, which premiered 34 years ago on August 5, 1988. We watched this one so many times as kids. I love the original, but this one was a lot more fun. The thought of the blob rolling over me and dissolving me was gross and fantastic! Watch it for the kitchen sink scene.
The Sixth Sense
M. Night Shyamalan’s penchant for twist or surprise endings and this movie was released on August 6, 1999? No, really? 1999! I didn’t see this one immediately, but it was very sad. Haley Joel Osment was the cutest, and he was excellent. Also, I don’t know if I can be unbiased about Toni Collette- I love her, she’s gorgeous, and she’s superb in everything. We love her even when the movie sucks! Everyone knows this movie’s big reveal, and once that’s out, I think it still has a lot to enjoy. Missed chances, relationships, fear, grief, and one of the most memorable lines of all time, “I see dead people.”
