IT: Welcome to Derry // Episode 7 – The Black Spot

It’s a new week of IT: Welcome to Derry. I hope everyone remembered to “Duck and Cover” after last week’s explosive finale at the Black Spot. Episode 7 wastes no time raising the stakes. Let’s get right into this recap. And yes, as always, spoilers ahead.

We open in 1908 at a bustling carnival. Pennywise, the Dancing Clown, dazzles children with a whimsical swirl of comedy and drama. The show ends in chaos when the overexcited crowd rushes the stage, forcing Pennywise, real name Bob Gray, to retreat. Backstage, Bob removes his makeup and chats with his daughter, Ingrid, who appears in her own bold clown face. Bob beams with pride, declaring that they’ll become the first father–daughter duo, Pennywise and Periwinkle. Ingrid bristles, reminding him that Periwinkle was her mother’s stage name. However, Bob insists she can choose another if she likes.

Later, Bob takes a smoke and whiskey break. Suddenly, a young boy stumbles from the woods, claiming he’s lost his parents. A scream pierces the night. The boy says it’s his mother. Bob follows him into the trees, and as they disappear, a dark, monstrous avatar of Pennywise rises toward the camera. Ingrid soon searches for her father, only to find a single bloody handkerchief.

The Burning

After the credits, we return to last week’s inferno at the Black Spot. Clint Bowers and his masked men storm the club, demanding Hank Grogan. Hank surrenders to prevent bloodshed, but the Black Spot’s patrons refuse to let the mob take him without a fight. A tense standoff follows until the white men retreat, only to barricade the doors and hurl Molotov cocktails inside. Chaos erupts as bullets rip through smoke and flames.

Separated in the panic, the children flee while Dick Hallorann navigates fire and hallucinations. A dead Civil War soldier walks through flames. Then we see a Native warrior in a bear headdress. Pennywise appears, pretending to offer help but instead devours a woman in front of Ronnie, who escapes into Dick’s arms. Pennywise is then seen backed by an army of the dead. Dick asks the Native ghost to lead him to the children. Elsewhere, Rich and Marge struggle to escape as collapsing beams fall. Rich finds a container barely big enough for one. He makes Marge take it, sacrificing himself in a heartbreakingly tender farewell about knights, pots, and rescuing maidens.

Cycle Complete, Time to Sleep

Outside, as the Black Spot burns, Stanley Kersh’s car breaks down. Ingrid emerges from the woods. When he threatens her, she calls to her “Papa,” who materializes behind him and brutally kills Stanley. Pennywise (Papa) eats half of Kersh’s head as Ingrid reveals she lured the mob there, knowing fear would follow. He praises her, then reveals he is not her father. He ate Bob, and with a flash of Deadlights, he pulls Ingrid into a trance.

After the Fire

When the flames finally die at the Black Spot, Marge is dragged from the metal container by firefighters. Her relief collapses into grief when she spots Rich’s lifeless body. Ronnie and Will join her as stunned children watch the devastation unfold. A hysterical woman cackles nearby, and Ingrid, now strapped into an ambulance, shoots the children a chilling, deathly glare.

Leroy and Charlotte rush in, grabbing Will in a protective embrace. Leroy is summoned by Colonel Fuller to Dick, who is unraveling. He’s convinced the spirits of the fire’s victims are crowding around him. Charlotte finds Hank and immediately urges him to leave Derry, demanding his clothes for a disguise. Colonel Fuller orders Leroy and Hank back to base for a debrief with General Shaw. Dick, still shaken, mutters that the Native warrior spirit will guide them to one of the ancient “Pillars,” where the tribe’s war chief once fell. Leroy tries to soothe Charlotte, promising that once their mission is over, they’re leaving Derry forever.

A montage sweeps across the town as a radio broadcast delivers a sanitized, racist retelling of the tragedy. Blame is placed on the Black Spot’s patrons for the fire, and they praise the “heroic white citizens,” including Stanley Kersh.

See You Shit-asses in 27 Years

Rose briefs the tribal council. Pennywise’s cycle has ended. Twenty-three people died in the fire. Seventeen children fell to Pennywise this cycle. Meanwhile, General Shaw arrives at an excavation site, praises Dick, and sends him back to base for rest.

At the Hanlon home, Hank dons Major Hanlon’s fatigues as he and Charlotte plan their next move. Ronnie and Marge head to Lilly’s to break the news; Will and Hank survived, but Rich did not. The kids visit the standpipe to collect Rich’s belongings. Marge finds his model plane and sobs that he never made it to Main Street.

Weapons Found

Back at the dig site, workers unearth a full turtle-shell-like structure encasing another meteorite shard. As it’s loaded for transport, Colonel Fuller tells Major Hanlon to go home. His part is done. Hanlon is furious. The shard should be moved toward town, not back to the base.

Charlotte brings Hank to Rose’s house, begging her to hide him until they can sneak him across the border. Taniel arrives breathless. He’s seen the Pillar heading back to the Air Force base. “We have a problem.”

At the base incinerator, Leroy storms in with a pistol, demanding they remove the shard from the flames. General Shaw calmly orders everyone to stand down. He reveals his true goal. Not fighting communists, but preventing a second civil war by halting America’s social progress. When Leroy threatens to report him, Shaw orders the shard burned. Leroy raises his gun, but Colonel Fuller forces him to disarm. Shaw, smiling, sends Leroy to his quarters—then instructs Fuller to ensure he never leaves the base.

Deep underground, Pennywise jolts awake. One of the shards has been destroyed.

Caught in the Deadlights

Back at the Hanlon house, Will answers a call from Ronnie. It’s her, except her voice twists into Pennywise’s. Will insists he isn’t afraid, just as Pennywise erupts from behind him, Deadlights blazing, and seizes him.
